Mapetla mediation held

A mediation hearing for sacked Estate Agency Affairs Board (EAAB) CEO Nomonde Mapetla took place at the CCMA in Johannesburg on Friday.

Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration spokeswoman Lusanda Myoli said that due to the private nature of the hearings, no details would be released and they would be closed to outsiders.

Mapetla was suspended on February 17 and her contract was the terminated on February 28 with full pay until July 15, when it would have expired.

The EAAB said there had been an irreconcilable breakdown between the parties, but Mapetla launched an urgent court application to be reinstated.

The High Court in Johannesburg ruled that it was not an urgent matter and did not grant urgent access.

The court did not deal with the validity of her claim that the sacking was a result of her whistleblowing activities.

She also lost her bid to stop the board from acting as a board.

Mapetla had worked at the EAAB, which regulates the country's 27,000 estate agents, for six years.

She has claimed that her sacking was linked to an investigation into corruption and fraud.

One of the companies investigated was that of Wendy Machanik.

Machanik, the close corporation Wendy Machanik Property Holdings, and its chief financial officer Bruce Bernstein have been charged with conspiracy to commit fraud, among other things.

Their case was postponed in the Commercial Crimes Court on Friday because Machanik had run out of funds.

Machanik is out on bail of R25,000 and Bernstein is out on R5000 bail.

The Public Protector has also agreed to look into the matter and a report is expected soon. - Sapa
